Special Education Gace

The Special Education General Curriculum (GACE) exam is designed for those seeking certification to teach special education in the state of Georgia. It is one of several tests required for certification. The Special Education GACE is split into two exams, each with its own subareas.

For exam 1, the first subarea requires you to understand the special education process and use your knowledge to connect with students and families. You are also expected to be able to manage a special education classroom, given that these students often present unique challenges.

The second subarea covers assessment and evaluation, including how to evaluate students effectively, apply accommodations and modifications, and properly document testing results.

Exam 2 has three subareas. The first requires an understanding of typical and atypical development in the context of learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, emotional/behavioral disorders, hearing impairments, visual impairments, physical impairments, speech/language impairments and traumatic brain injuries.

The second subarea covers academic instruction for teaching students with a range of needs for reading/English language arts (ELA), mathematics, science and social studies.

There are two parts to the special education gace test: one is a pedagogical test that assesses a candidate’s understanding of how children learn, while the second is a content test that assesses whether or not the candidate has adequate knowledge of the academic subjects they will be teaching.
