Special Education EC 12 is a certification to teach special education in Texas. The main difference between Special Education EC 12 and Generalist EC 6, 4-8, or 8-12 is that you can only teach in a self-contained classroom as a Special Education teacher. In other words, your students would all be special education students. As a Generalist EC 6, 4-8, or 8-12 you can teach general education students as well as special education students who are included in the general education classroom. You also have the opportunity to co-teach with another teacher.
If you want to be certified to teach any subject area in grades 4 up through 12 (not including K through 3), then you need to go through the Alternative Certification Program (ACP) through Region 13. You will be placed into an internship type of program where you will work at a school district for a year and complete coursework through UT El Paso’s online program. After passing all of your state exams, you will be recommended for certification. Once Region 13 receives approval from the state, they will send you your certificate by mail.
