The Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) assessment is designed to evaluate the academic and cognitive ability of children between the ages of 3 and 5, who have been identified as having a potential developmental delay. The purpose of the assessment is to determine which services are most appropriate for the child so that they can be fully supported in their learning environment. The ECSE assessment is administered by a professional outside of the child’s school district, typically a licensed psychologist or special needs educator.
The assessment will begin with an interview with the child’s parent(s) in order to gather information about the family and their concerns about the child’s development. This information will then be used to inform standardized testing procedures, which will include an IQ test, a test of language proficiency, and assessments of other skills like fine motor skills and social skills. At the end of the assessment, there will be another interview where the assessor will discuss their findings with the parents and provide guidance for how best to support their child’s learning.
This program has been designed to help children ages 3 through 5 who have disabilities or delays in development. It is composed of a series of interviews and assessments that will allow us to better understand your child’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as their potential needs.
The first section of the assessment is an interview with the parents. We will ask questions that will help us better understand your child’s health history, educational history, and any concerns you may have. We will also ask you to describe your own development as a child, as this can help give us some clues as to what potential challenges your child may be facing.
