This review seeks to assess and synthesize the literature on physical education (PE) curriculum for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The overarching goal of this review is to identify the most critical elements required for a successful PE curriculum for children with ASD. This paper will also identify key challenges and barriers to successful implementation.
A comprehensive search was conducted using multiple databases and searching terms related to physical education, curriculum, and autism spectrum disorder. The search yielded 628 articles; those that were duplicates or were not relevant were removed until 134 remained, which were then reviewed in full text. After applying inclusion criteria, seven studies remained for analysis. These studies were examined for common themes and key findings related to the topic of PE curriculum for children with ASD.
