Let’s start with something simple: What is a speech therapist? A speech therapist is a professional who works with people to help them improve the way they speak, so they can communicate more easily with others. Often, we work with children or adults who have been diagnosed with an intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, or Down syndrome. We also work with people who have suffered traumatic brain injuries or physical ailments that make speaking difficult for them.
In some cases, we teach patients how to pronounce words and use their speech apparatuses properly so they sound more like everyone else when they speak. But in other cases, our therapy focuses on helping patients learn alternative modes of communication—like using sign language and other nonverbal techniques—that allow them to communicate their needs and ideas without having to speak at all.
