There are a lot of ways to be a parent, but for the parents of special-needs children, there is no other option than to be the parent of a special-needs child. This means that these parents have an intense focus on the child’s needs over their own. They are unlikely to let friends or family fill in as caretakers when they need some time off.

They may also find it difficult to accept help from others. Even when they know they can’t do everything alone, and even when they know that getting help is good for their child, it can seem like a rejection of their child’s unique needs. It may feel like if someone else is taking care of them, then their supply of love for that child will run out.

Special-needs parents may need support in finding ways to take time for themselves without feeling guilty or abandoning their child. They may also need help finding resources that will provide them with information on how best to help their children.
