Bs Special Education

The BS in Special Education offers students a solid foundation in the education and psychology of exceptional students. This program is designed to prepare students for certification in special education and to inspire them to become innovative teachers, administrators, and advocates for children with special needs. Students will be provided with specialized instruction in evidence-based strategies and techniques that will benefit a wide range of exceptional learners.

As a Special Education Teacher, you are required to work with students with learning disabilities. You will be responsible for teaching special education classes, as well as helping the students with behavior problems. Your duties will also include working with parents and other teachers to develop an appropriate learning plan for each student. The program is offered online through distance learning and face-to-face classes at our campus locations, providing students with flexibility to complete their degree at their own pace. The curriculum includes coursework in general education, educational technology, language arts, reading, math, life sciences and social sciences. Students will also complete coursework in two areas of specialization: mild to moderate disabilities and severe disabilities. 

Students who graduate from this program will have the knowledge and skills necessary to work as early childhood interventionists, elementary teachers, secondary teachers, resource specialists or teaching assistants in public schools or private agencies.

The program is designed to provide students with specialized instruction in evidence-based strategies and techniques that will benefit a wide range of learners. Students enrolled in the BS in Special Education program will take courses such as: Introduction to Exceptional Learners; Learning Disabilities; Emotional and Behavioral Disorders; Introduction to Assessment; Instructional Methods for Special Education; Co-Teaching Strategies; Applied Behavior Analysis; and more. The program culminates with an internship course that allows students to gain hands-on experience working with exceptional learners in a supervised setting.

This program offers students a solid foundation in the education and psychology of exceptional students and prepares them for certification in special education. Graduates will be able to adapt lessons to support the unique needs of each student, including those with learning disabilities, developmental delays, behavioral disorders, giftedness, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), physical disabilities, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disability, hearing impairments, vision impairments, speech and language impairments, or health impairments.

This program is intended for individuals seeking a bachelor’s degree prior to initial teacher licensure or certification programs upon completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution.

Upon completion of this program, students will be eligible for certification in special education in their state.

This program is designed with the goal of preparing teachers who are sensitive to and effective with all students, especially those who may require additional educational services. Students will learn how to adapt their instruction to meet the needs of various learning styles, including physical and sensory impairments; speech, language, and communication disorders; emotional disturbances; intellectual disabilities; health impairments; traumatic brain injury; autism spectrum disorder; deaf-blindness; developmental delays; and multiple disabilities.
