The world of special education is constantly changing and in order to meet the needs of students today, we are seeking an experienced and passionate Special Education Teacher who has experience working with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) programming. This candidate will work with students who have a variety of disabilities at multiple school sites. A strong candidate will be able to demonstrate their ability to teach using various teaching methods and materials, as well as their ability to develop creative, engaging, and effective classroom lessons that are in alignment with state standards. They should also be able to complete student assessments and evaluations, document student progress, provide services according to the Student Individualized Education Plan (IEP), and collaborate with other staff members on IEP meetings.

Open-mindedness is key to the evolution of any industry, but it’s especially important in special education. Since the need for special education instructors and assistant teachers is so great, many of them aren’t fully trained. This means they enter the workforce without having addressed their own personal biases and beliefs about the students they’ll be working with—and the industry as a whole. Even those who are trained can still find themselves struggling to teach effectively because their biases are affecting their ability to connect with students.
As an educator, your biggest goal should be to empower your students to reach their full potential. But if you’re not careful, your own biases might limit how much progress you see that student make. If you’re going to be effective at what you do, you need to understand that this isn’t about you.
If you have a bias against a certain learning style or teaching method, it’s important that you take the time to learn as much as possible about it before you try it out in class. This includes finding out why some people think that way and where certain ideas come from. If there’s something that doesn’t make sense about what someone is saying, ask them questions until it does! You might discover some interesting things along the way too.
